The case of Cal Harris and Michele Harris was one of the first cases that we heard about when it comes to true crime coverage. It happened years ago, in fact, almost two decades ago. But it was a case that resulted in more questions than answers.

In Season 1 Episode 1, we chose to focus on this case because this was the one that got us hooked on true crime in the first place. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you can listen to it over on ourĀ episodes page and find Episode 1 under Season 1.

Where is Michelle?

The case is about a missing mom, Michele Harris. She went missing while going through a divorce from her then-husband Cal. However, her disappearance also happened the day after September 11, 2001. Since she went missing in New York state, the police resources were scarce and her investigation wasn’t handled the same way as it would if officers were available to assist. All officers were called to New York City to assist after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

One of the reasons why we chose this case is that Michele remains missing.

The determination by the state

While it is normal to investigate those closest to the victim, it seems that Cal Harris was targeted by the prosecutors in this case. It would take four trials before a legal outcome would give Cal an answer.

However, the answer wasn’t about Michele. She remains missing to this day and the prosecution appears to have given up on finding the truth after learning that Cal Harris could not be charged again after four trials.

Remains a big mystery

This case is one that has us scratching our heads. One person remains missing, a prosecution went after one man four times, and there’s no desire to find the truth, at least not in a legal sense. And this leads us to question – what really happened to Michele?
